compare approaches one problem · two ways
Compare Approaches
The same problem solved different ways in Python, run on the same input, with what really differs and when to use each.
pandas groupby vs SQL GROUP BY
Orders and average total per channel, busiest first.
what differs
Same idea: split rows by a key, aggregate each group. pandas chains methods on a DataFrame; SQL describes the result declaratively and the database plans how to compute it.
at a glance
| approach | use it when |
|---|---|
| A · pandas groupby | The data is already a DataFrame, or the next steps are Python. |
| B · SQL (sqlite3) | The data lives in a database, or the team already speaks SQL. |
Watch out: NULL keys: GROUP BY makes one NULL group; pandas drops NaN keys unless dropna=False.
the outputs
Each approach runs on the same input.
